What is human trafficking?

Human trafficking—otherwise known as modern day slavery—can take many shapes. Understanding the different types of trafficking can help you recognize, prevent, or ask for help.

Labor Trafficking

Labor trafficking is the use of force, fraud or coercion to compel a person to provide labor or services against their will.

This can happen through the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery.

22 U.S.C. § 7102[11][B]

Adult Sex Trafficking

Adult sex trafficking is the use of force, fraud or coercion to compel a person aged 18+ to engage in a commercial sex act.

This can happen through the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, obtaining, patronizing, or solicitation of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act.

Child Sex Trafficking

Child sex trafficking is the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, obtaining, patronizing, or soliciting of a minor (a person under the age of 18) to perform a commercial sex act.

For minors, there is no requirement to show force, fraud or coercion - even if they appear to consent to the commercial sex act.

22 U.S.C. § 7102[11][B]
